» A HOPELESS POSITION." SOUTH ISLAND OPINION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DIXNEDIN, Monday. Tho South Island Dairy Associations' annual report states that under present conditions the position of the average dairyfarmer in New Zealand is hopeless and unless costs are brought down to a level which would leave him sufficient margin on which to live, there is no alternative but to seek sime other means of existence.
On to-day's values the average gross return per cow was less than £7 10s per annum, out of which the fanner had to meet mortgage commitments and all bis oilier obligations.
