INTOXICATED DRIVER.
SEQUEL TO TWO COLLISIONS. MAGISTRATE IMPOSES £25 FINE. The driver of a motor-car which collided with two stationary vehicles in city streets 011 Saturday evening appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motorcar. The accused, George Meredith, aged 33, commercial traveller, pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kolly said that at about 9 p.m. on Saturday accused wss seen to enter a motor-car parked in High Stret. He starJod the car and had driven only about two chains when tho vehicle struck a stationary car, which was damaged to the extent of about £26. Accused drove on and while passing through Customs Street, ho collided with a parked motor-cycle, nearly £ls worth of damage resulting. Constable Fowke saw accused, whom he pursued in a taxi and overtook in Jlobson Street. Accused was. found to bo intoxicated and was arrested. A quantity of liquor was in tho back of accused's car.
" This is a very difficult case for counsel to speak on," said Mr., Sullivan, who represented accused. "My client has been driving for 12 years and has never been in trouble in tho past. It sounds like an ' old soldier 1 story, but accused was exceedingly worried and ill and when he took soino inferior whisky it affected him .suddenly. I ask for leniency as ho will have to pay for the damage to the other vehicles."
The magistrate fined Meredith £25 and cancelled his driver's licence for six months Default was fixed at two months' imprisonment.
