FARMER AND THE LEVY.
CHARGE OF DEFAULT.
UNEMPLOYMENT ACT CASE. MAGISTRATE RESERVES DECISION. A Whitford farmer, Fred. S. Miller, was charged in the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with failing to pay his levy under the Unemployment Act. Mr. Grieve, of the Depart ment of Labour, said the department was satisfied from reports received that the defendant was quite able to pay the levy. "The department does not expect to draw blood from a stone, and prosecutions are only being made where we aro (satisfied that the contributor is able to meet his obligations," said Mr. Grieve. A statement was read from defendant, who did not appear, lie was farming 72 acres and milking 15 cows, his monthly cream cheque being £ls during the season. lfe also sold firewood from liis holding, whidi brought in about £2O per annum, lie had a wife and seven children, and his inability to pay was due to lack of income, lie enclosed 15s in payment of the last two Quarters' contributions.
Tho magistrate said ho would reserve decision to ascertain what attitude the Courts should lake in these cases.
