RAILWAY PASSENGERS' COMFORT.
Si r) —I beg to draw attention to the utter' lack of heating arrangements in the King Country passenger trains leaving Taumarunui for Frankton Junction at 7 a.m., and Frankton Junction for Taumarunui at 1.30 p.m. Running as these trains do in conjunction with tho Rotorua express, they provide the only fast connection to the north and carry a considerable passenger traffic, in addition to goods, but no adequate arrangements for heating are made, though for a considerable portion of their journey they run through high and cold country. As they do not do any wayside shunting surely it would be possible for the carriages and van to be placed next the engino and steam-heated, thus providing a reasonable standard of comfort during the five-hour journey. We have lately had some fair frosts and on those days entering the train has been about as pleasant as entering a cool store. Trusting that this much needed improvement will be possible at an early date. R-F.
