FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following aro extracts from the New Zealand Herald of May 18, 1881: Several gentlemen have made representations concerning the desirability of establishing a telephone exchange. As only 20 subscribers are required to begin with there should be. no difficulty on that score in a large city like Auckland. We hear that one medical man proposes to establish telephonic communication between his private residence and his apothecary, so that prescriptions may be made up or visits arranged for as promptly as possible. Ireland is in a very disturbed state. The number of agrarian outrages is increasing at an alarming rate. It is expected that a number of prominent leaguers will be arrested. Among others mentioned as likely (o be seized is Dillon, member for Tipperary. Sixty thousand emigrants left British ports for America during the month of April. It is announced that the Boers are making preparations for war. It is uncertain whether thev contemplate further hostilities with the British or whether they are merely preparing for the contingencies arising from the disaffection of native tribes.
