AMERICAN TARIFFS.
RETALIATION BY EUROPE. MENTION AT WASHINGTON. (Receiver 1 Mav 10, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. May 9. A direct threat of European retaliation against the high American tariff rates came up in tho discussions at the congress of the International Chamber of Commerce, when Dr. \V. H. Coates, a British jdelegate, said that when efficiency was very high exports were natural. Hie rest of the world wanted to benefit by tha£ efficiency. It wanted American cars, as they were so good, but Europe would shut them out, if America did not take the products of her efficiency, whatever their form or nationality might be. Mr. Bell (Britain) termed tariffs tho machine-gun, high explosive, and poison gas of Economic well-being.
