COUNCIL EMPLOYEES' WAGES. EFFECT OF THE REDUCTIONS. [ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI. Saturday. Reductions in salaries and wages'of its employees were, decided by the Opotiki County Council at its meeting yesterday. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Beid, presided. The engineer and the clerk are cac 1 o receive £420 a year in future. Day rates were fixed as follows-.-Gravel carter, three-horse team, 30s a day; lorry driver, 15s 8d a dav; grader men. 15s 8d a djy; heading hand, 14s a day. Surfacemen's wages are to be fixed when the Arbitration Court's decision is made known, and all the. now rates will operate from the date fixed by the Court. Estimates for the year were received from the Opotiki Hospital Board, showing the amount of the, county levy to be £1278. This amount is slightly lower than last year. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand wrote inquiring whether the council would consent to the reduction of its overdraft limit from £12,500 to as the amount of overdraft used last year did not exceed £9OOO. The clerk said the council might require more assistance this year. It was decided that the limit could bo reduced from £12,j00 to £11.500. , . , The Public Works Department reported that another section of the Coast road at Haparapara had been handed over to the jurisdiction of the council.
