MAJORITY OF TWO.
NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION.
SCULLtN GOVERNMENT SAVED ELECTION EXPECTED SOON. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, (deceived May 8. 8.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 8. The debate on Mr. .J. A. Lyons' noconfidence motion ended abruptly in the House of Representatives to-day, when the Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, applied the closure and the motion was defeated hy 34 votes to 32. Mr. Lyons' speech was interrupted by a limning fire of interjections. Ho said the call to him was not alone from the press, but it was a call from Australia. Mr. Rlakeley: It is the boodle call. Mr. Lyons said he was looking forward to the time when he could play his part in the restoration of prosperity and confidence. There is an impression at Canberra that the Prime Minister, having regard to the augmented Opposition and the futility of trying to carry on along present lines, will declare for a general election before July or August. The financial position continues to drift alarmingly, and the only way in which the. Government proposes to cope with it is bv means of a fiduciary note issue.
Well informed opinion is that the Senate is certain to reject the Commonwealth Bank Bill, which authorises a further shipment of gold.
