THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.

BANKS SECTION ACTIVE. A comparatively healthy volume of business was put through- on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. The • banking and mining groups showed the greatest activity. In the gilt-edged section a wide range of Government loans was sought on a very firm market without drawing selling quotations for more than three issues.

In the banking group, Commercials of Australia gained 3d on the Southern market of two days before to sell at 14s 3d. The preference issue lost 6d on Thursday's Southern market to change hands during the afternoon at £5 9s 6d. New Zealands wenkoned to see business at 51s, compared with 51s 6d on Wednesday. Uniotis gained 6s 6d on the previous day, a sale being made during the afternoon at £7 6s 6d. New Zealand Insurance shares were active on a market which firmed after a sale during tho morning at 41s 3d, to see further business at 41s 6d. The previous Auckland sale was made a week boforo at 425. South British were offered at 52s 6d without drawing a buying quotation.

More attention was paid to Golds-brough-Morts, buyers coming in at 19s 3d at the mid-day call and moving up to 19s 6d at the close, compared with tho last New Zealand sale nine days before at 19s lOd. New Zealand Breweries eased during the day. Colonial Sugars were dealt in twice during the morning at £33 6s, compared with £34 earlier in the week prior, to payment of the 25s half-yearly dividend. The firmer tone of Wilsons Cements of the previous day was sustained, and two sales were made during the morning at 40s, compared with business in the South on Monday at 38s KMd. More wer6 wantod at the afternoon call at 40s, hut sellers were not attracted.

In mining, Waihis changed hands, ex div., at 14s which is slightly under (he cum div. parity. Waihi Grand Junctions sold at &s 5d and Mount Lyells were dealt in at the previous day's price.
