EFFECT OF NEW SCORING. GLOUCESTERSHIRE'S GOOD WIN. LONDON. May 6. The new system of scoring points in the county cricket championship has quickly brightened cricket. The lure of 15 points was shown at the Oval, when Gloucestershire, after being near defeat, thrilled the spectators by snatching victory from' Surrey. Mr. Beverley Lyon declared the Gloucestershire innings closed when the side was 83 runs behind. Mr. P. H. G. Fender also declared Surrey's innings closed, leaving Gloucestershire to make 144 in less than two hours. Hammond made the wjnning hit within two minutes of time. Surrey made 258 and 60 for six wickets (declared) and Gloucestershire 175 for seven (declared) and 145 for seven. The new method or scoring points for the county championship is as follows: — For an outright win the winners score 15 points; if tiie match is unfinished, tho sido leading on the first innings scores fivo points, and the opponents three; if thero is no result on tho first innings, or no play, each side scores four points.

The Marylehone Cricket Club at its annual meeting approved of the alteration in t lie laws, with the object of helping the bowlers on the larger wicket, which is made compulsory in firstclass matches. The pitch may be rolled for seven minutes at the beginning of play, and at tho end of each innings, instead of for 10 minutes. Sir Kynaston Studd, the retiring president, after saying that he was looking forward with pleasure to the New Zealand matches, nominated Lord Bridgeman as tho new president. The new committeemen aro Sir Kynaston Studd, Mr. P. I'. Warner, Mr. R. Mallett and Lord Aberdare.
