STATE RETIREMENTS.
POLICY OF GOVERNMENT. GREATEST SAVING WANTED. A statement on the Government's policy in regard to civil service requirements, in which several points hitherto in doubt are cleared up, has been made by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in a letter to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. •' Each case is dealt with on its individual merits," says Mr. Forbes. "In some cases, due to a falling-off of work or a rearrangement of duties, it will be possible to effect retirements without filling the vacancies. In other cases, however particularly where the position vacated is a statutory one, it is necessary to fill the immediate vacancy, in some cases by a permanent appointment, in others by making temporary arrangements. The guiding principles, however, are, firstly, that the efficiency of the service should be maintained, and, secondly, that the financial saving should' be as great as possible. As will be gathered from the special provision in the Finance Act, sectiqn 14, it is no part of, the policy of the Government that an undue drain should bo thrown upon the various superannnuation funds."
