EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
The following aro extracts from- the New Zealand Herald of Monday, May 2, 1881: — The news received in Auckland on Friday of the striking of the Tararua on her voyage betweon Dunedin and the Bluff did not cause very much excitement, simply because the statement was made, " All lives safe," and it was added -that the vessel was close in shore. When, however, the news came on Satui'day that the vessel had broken up and that it had been found impossible to save the unfortunate passengers and crew, the excitement became intense. r Last evening, at St. Patrick's dral, His Grace Archbishop Steins bade an affectionate farewell to the large congregation present and stated that his weak and failing health compelled him to relinquish a position, the duties connected with which he found too onerous for him. It .was only after consultation with the Holy See that he decided on caking the present course, to leave for some time to recruit his health, if it was possible. Should his health improve he would _return to Auckland, until which, or until a new bishop was appointed, the affairs of the diocese would be under the jurisdiction of the Very Rev. H. J, Fynes as vicar-general. Radical members of the House of Commons are strongly opposed to the proposal to be made shortly by the Premier, the Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone, that funds bo voted for the erection of a monument to the late Earl of Beaconsfield in Westminster Abbey.
