MINISTER'S FASTEST RUN.
WHY MR. CLYNES WAS CHASED
A thrilling sprint, which he won by losing a pursuing policeman, was described by Mr. J. R. Clvnes, Home Secretary, at the. Norwich Club for Working Lads recently.
The incident happened years ago, when the present head of the Home Office was a boy of 10, working as a half-timer in a Lancashire factory.
Anxious to learn how to swim, young Clvnes and two or three companions went for a dip one Sunday afternoon in prohibited water. But, alas! they were discovered in the act by a guardian of the law.
" As soon as «e saw thp policeman," said the Home Secretary in his speech to t.he boys. " we slipped away with our boots and clothes. I can only say that, good runner as that policeman was, I won."
Mr. Clvnes commended the work of the club organisers, and said that, boxing and gymnastics helped to keep boys out of mischief and youths out of prison.
