THE UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY.
Sir,—The new policy of the Unemployment Board shows clearly how utterly futile is such'a scheme for relieving want. Under the original No. 5 scheme a married man with more than three children received £2 16s per week. Under the new scheme of three weeks' work out of four i( means he has only £1 17s 6d. How, 1 ask you, can a family of eight, the six children under 16, live on £1 17s 6d ? The unemployment levy measure provides for sustenance payments, fixed at £1 18s for a man and his wife, with 4s for each child under 16. Presumably the rate of sustenance was fixed as low as possible. Then how can any sane person expect a married man with more than three child- ' ren to exist on £1 17s 6d per week ? Justice.
