ELLERSLIE NOTES.

CANDIDATES FOR AVONDALE. STAR STRANGER AT WORK. PAITONU DUE TO-MORROW. After Monday's racing matters were very ' quiet at Ellerslie yesterday, when most of the horses were let off lightly and veiy little fast work was attempted. Star Stranger, who is remaining to race at Avondale on Saturday, was sent once round on the No. 2 grass and worked with plenty of freedom. Star Stranger's owner-trainer J. H. Jefierd, returned to Hastings on Monday, but he intends coming back to see his horse race on Saturday. In the meantime Star Strunger is being cared for by A. Cook, who is waiting at Ellerslie until after the Avondale meeting with Karapoti, Leitrim, Soloist and Tenakoe. E. George is remaining at Ellerslie with Lady Qucx, who is to run in the All-aged Stakes at Avondale on Saturday, after ■which he will take her to Trentham for the Hawke's Hay Stakes. George's other candidate at Ellerslie. Easter Time, has been sont back to New Plymouth and will probably not race again this season. Easter Time has raced with marked consistency, having been unplaced only twice, and he has shown himself to bo a very genuine racehorse. Airtight Returns Home. J. Fryer sent Airtight back to Hawera yesterday. but he is waiting at Ellerslie for the Avondale meeting with Bright Glow and Peter Jackson. His team for Avondale will be strengthened by the inclusion of Paitonu, who is expected to arrive to-morrow. Paitonu showed a return to form by winning at Feilding and he should give a good account of himself in his engagements' at Avondale, particularly if the . going is soft With A. G. Campbell in the saddle Land Measure was given another schooling lesson over the hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday. She stifled one fence, but otherwise gave a good display for a beginner. Tho three-year-old Full Measure, who has been 011 the easy list since rating at Thames in January, has rejoined G. Holland's team at Ellerslie. Full pleasure has built up splendidly during his respite from training and after being pottered about for some weeks 110 is now ,in first-class older to go ahead with serious work. Pegaway was sent home to To Awamutu yesterday and will not race at the Avondale meeting. Although he - looked a picturo and was galloping well before the meeting, Pegaway did not perform as well as expected at Ellerslie, where ho was twice unplaced. Loss of a forward position at the first half-mile cost him any chance he possessed in the, Easter Handicap, but lie had every opportunity in the Huia Handicap and was well beaten. Last of Beau Cavalier. The Gisborne-owned horse Singleton has arrived at Ellerslie with a view to contesting the hurdle events at the Avondale meeting. It is very likely that Singleton will remain at Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting in Juno. It .would appear as if the last has been seen of Beau Cavalier on the racecourse. After standing up to a fair amount of pacework he had a recurrence of lameness last week and it is unlikely that any further attempt will, be ma'dq to train him. Beau Cavalier raced with considerable, success 111 important jumping events in 1926-27 and 1927-28 seasons, winning, among other races, the Great Northern .Steeplechase, the Grand National Steeplechase and tho Great Northern Hurdles. The two-year-old filly Marchette. by Limond from March, who was put out for a spell after being in training for a few months in tho spring, lias again been taken in hand by N. Cunningham. Her forelegs are not the best, but in other respects sho I is a very attractive filly.

MASHOOR'S PREPARATION.

There was not much activity at Takanitii yes'»>rday, as most of those in forward condition had raced at Ellerslic. 1 lie few gallops recorded were accomplished on the middle grass, which was in Rood order, although a little slow after the rain. Catchem (Feme) and Magic Mint (Farrell) were on terms at tho 'end of five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. a useful effort for maidens. Both havo improved in condition during recent weeks, but the local classes may .bo a little too strong for them at present. Vandyke (Craig) was half a length in front of Sub-Editor (Farrell) at the end of five furlongs in 1.3*,. with Vandyke finishing the better. This horse is now working very freely, but Sub-Editor may not be quite at his best, as he has got a little above himself during recent weeks. Ruffles (Mcllroy) jumped two hurdles in dashing style and, although he hit the second, he showed good stylo and is a promising recruit to the ranks of hiudlers. He looks very well, and afterwards, carrying a good weight, ran five furlongs in 1.4 4-5.

The brown filly by Chesterfield wnß to have gone with Ruffles, Jbut she was left badly. Afterwards she showed plenty of speed in running three furlongs in 37 4-ss. For a novice this filly has shaped well in her first sprinting tasks.

St. Ames wns jumped over one hurdle, which he cleared in fine style. Ho will be in good shape to contest hack hurdle laces at approaching meetings.

Havering tind Bronze Englo did steady work, both-looking very bright nfler their outings at Ellerslic. Tho former will be a vory fit horse if ho roces at Avondalo on Saturday.

C. Morse is nt present giving Mashoor only tho lightest of tasks on tho road, but he may start another preparation for jumping events next month. P. E. Pope's two-year-olds High Comedy, Royal Artist and Spoedmint all worked usefully and showed no sign of ill-effects from their Ellerslic . racing. They are in fine condition and should rnce well in the few races they may huvo before finishing their efforts for the season.

The Chief Rulor—Archeress gelding in Gi Morse's team is now a regular worker. He is a woll-frnmed youngster, but it will ho aonie niontlin before lie arrives at racing condition.
