EARLY MORNING ARREST

EFFECTIVE BURGLAR ALARM. INTRUDER IN CLUB PAVILION. MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL. The ringing of the bell of a recentlyinstalled electric burglar alarm system connecting tho Remuera Bowling Club s pavilion with the residence of Mr. W. M. Johnstone, caretaker and groundsman, was largely responsible for the arrest of an intruder. When awakened by the boll, Mr. Johnstone telephoned to t ? be city police, and Constable Gaston, accompanied by Constable Oliver, proceeded by motor-car to tho Bowling Club's pavilion. On arrival tho constables and Mr. Johnstone made a careful examination of the exterior of the building, but. wero unable to find any marks showing how tho intruder had gained entrance. Mr. Johnstone then unlocked tho front door and all went inside. Turning into a room leading off tho passago Constable Gaston discovered a man hiding behind a counter. The constable immediately closed with tho intruder, who was taken into custody. No damage had been done to the pavilion, and the safo and other contents of the building had not been interfered with. The man arrested, James Burke, aged 36, labourer, appeared in the Police Court yesterday morning charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he had been found by night unlawfully within enclosed premises. He was further charged with being in possession, by nighfc, of implements for housebreaking, namely, a chisel, a quantity of gelignite and detonators and fuse. Accused was remanded until Monday on the application of the police.

"I think he would be better in- custody," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, when counsel, Mr. Noble, asked for bail. "He is not bailable as a right, and no bail will be granted," said the magistrate, Mr. E. C. Cut ten.
