AUTUMN AT ELLERSLIE.

DAY FOR TAILORED SUITS. THE POPULAR BERET. That the weather should have broken just at Easter time was a disappointment to many people and although it cleared later in the-day. it had undoubtedly influenced women in their choice of clothes for the races on Saturday. They came prepared for the worst and in consequence the frocking was of a distinctly utilitarian nature. What might have been lacking in colour, however, was made up for in the flower-beds, which were brilliant with all the rich shades of autumn—gold, umber, deep reds, golden brown and pale yellow. It had also touched the beautiful old oaks and elms with its magic finger and in a little while they will bo a blaze of gold and chestnut colour.

Many tailored suits and ensembles were worn, the greater number being in mixed tweeds, of which the prevailing shades were fawn, brown, mixed grey and blue, while the black tailored suit again held its place in the warm regard of many women. The smartness of these was indubitable, especially when worn with plain little black hats of felt or velvet and with long stoles in Russian sable or red fox. As well as making coats and skirts, black face cloth was used to fashion some of the new long coats, while others again were in mixed black and white tweed which, with astrachan collar and cuffs, were extremely effective. These long coats, whether in all black clot.li or in tweeds, seemed to 1)0. more fitted than they have been in recent years and the most used trimming for them was of nutria lamb or fur :n varying shades of grey and brown. Many handsome stoles were worn and fur coats in blonde colourings also made their appearance. The influence of the autumn season was shown more particularly in hats. Several were in velvet and many also were in black felt, briinless and worn well off the face. Berets to match the costume were worn by quite a number of women and on many they looked very attractive.
