The university tournament was commenced yesterday between teams repro scnting the Otago, Canterbury, Victoria and Auckland colleges. Good progress was made with the tennis matches, the semi-finals being reached in several sections. The boxing contests were commenced in the morning and tho finals were held in the evening. The rowing contest was held in the afternoon. For the eight-oared rowing contest for the Hibbcrlcy Shield thero wore crews from the Auckland, Victoria and Canterbury Colleges. A close race resulted in a win for Victoria, who beat Auckland by about a canvas, with Canterbury about a length away. Results of the tennis tourney were as follows: Men's Singles.—Stedman (Auckland) beat Adkins (Canterbury), 6—4, 6—2; McCarthy (Victoria) boat Falconer (Otago), 7 —5, 6—o; Barrer (Canterbury) beat Bowden (Auckland), 60, 6—3; Christie (Otago) beat Dive (Victoria), 6—4, 7—5. Semi-final: Stedman beat McCarthy, 6—l, 6—2; Barrer beat Christie, 6—3, B—6. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Sherris (Canterbury) beat Miss Taylor (Auckland), 6—4, 4—6, 7—5; Miss Rankin (Otago) beat Miss Lino (Victoria), 6—3, 6—3; Miss Robertson (Auckland) beat Miss Sharp (Canterbury), 6—l, 6—3; Miss Ballantyno (Otago) beat Miss Fragnell (Victoria), 6—2, 6—l. Semi-final: Miss Robertson beat Miss Ballantyne, 6—5, 6—2. Men's Doubles. Stedman and Stedman (Auckland) beat McCarthy and Dive (Victoria), 6—4, 7—5; Cant and Andrews (Canterbury) beat Falconer and Small (Otago), 4—6, 6 —3, 6—2; Long and Harris (Victoria) beat Bowden and Walton, 6—4, 6—o; Barrer and Adkins (Canterbury) beat Stallworthy and Christie (Otago), o—6, 6—l, 6—3. Ladies' Doubles. —First round: Misses Pragnell and Briggs (Victoria) beat Misses Scott and Sharp (Canterbury), 6—5, 6—o; Misses Rankin and Seavill (Otago) beat Misses Robertson and Taylor (Auckland), 6—4, 6—3; Misses Kane and Thompson (Canterbury) beat Misses Line and Dyer (Victoria), 6—5, 6—4; Misses Ballantvno and Calvcr (Otago) beat Mi sses ,J. Mcintosh and J. Chambers (Auckland), 6 —2, B—6.
Mixed Doubles.—First round; Miss Sherris and Cant (Canterbury) beat Miss Seaviil and Clark (Utago), 6 —o, 6—3; Miss Mcintosh and J. E. Stedman (Auckland) beat Miss Briggs and Harris (Victoria), 6—3, 6—4; Miss Dyer and Long (Victoria) beat Miss Chambers and Walton (Auckland), 6—4, B—6; Miss Calver and Stallworthv (Otago) beat Miss Scott and Young (Canterbury), 6 —3, 6-1.
