CONDITIONS AT RUAPEHU.

RAPID ASCENT MADE. EARLY WINTER ANTICIPATED. LFROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THE CHATEAU, Wednesday. A rapid ascent of Buapehu was made on Monday by Mr. Ormond Wilson, of Bulls, accompanied by Guide L. Young. They reached the Ski Club hut 74 minutes after leaving tho Chateau and reached the Paretetaitonga peak in three hours 14 minutes. As there had been a. heavy fall of snow the previous night, the going was fairly heavy. The lake on the top of Ruapehu varies in temperature, and it appears to be almost boiling at times. The water undermines the surrounding ice banks, nnd every few days great blocks of ice fall into the water with a roar than can be heard some distance away. Present indications are that an early winter can be anticipated as already there have been several falls of snow, and even the steep slopes of Ngauruhoe are covered.

The heather which was planted on the tussock plains of the National Park is now in bloom.
