MAORIS ASSERT RIGHTS.
WHAKAREWAREWA INCIDENT. GEAR REMOVED FROM RESERVE. [from our own correspondent.] ROTORUA, Wednesday. There was considerable excitement among the Maoris at Whakarewarewa on Monday afternoon, and the natives removed from the Maori reserve a quantity of material which had been taken out there by the Public Works Department for the Tourist Department. The Tourist Department arranged for a quantity of material and gear to be taken to Whakarewarewa for the purpose of testing tho flow of water from a spring situated in the native reserve. The natives were of the opinion that there was some other purpose in view and, as they claim the springs in the reserve belong to the community of Komiti Maori, the department had no right to interfere with the spring without their permission. Holding this opinion, the natives removed the gear outside the reserve.
The district manager of the Tourist Department said that it was only intended to test the flow of the spring. However, a conference was being arranged between the natives and the department, when it is expected matters would reach an amicable settlement*. i T .
