IMPORTED TIMBER.

Sir, —Having seen just- lately the return visit of the Golden West, an American lumber ship, slacked high above lha decks with oregon, I began to wonder when we are going to wake up? Are wc satisfied that New Zealand has no timber that could be cut and handled by our own many of whom .are'unemployed at the present moment? Surely, if it is, as I am told, the cost of handling New Zealand timber that prevents its use, it is time something was done to remedy that. But to picture, say, the rebuilding of Napier aud Hastings with timber supplied and brought from America in American ships looks to me like an insult to many who have generously put their hand in their pocket in the: hops of helping those who suffered so severely from the earthquake—ana a slap in Ilia face to the unemployed, who are only waiting and longing to get to work. Lflfc us take a lesson from America, and put our country first.Every penny spent in New Zealand is money saved. S.R.B.
