DOMINION CRICKETERS.

THE TOUR OF ENGLAND.

POSITIONS FOR T. C. LOWRY.

CAPTAIN AND MANAGER.

Team Limited to 14 men.

fnY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ' CHRISTCfTOROII, Tuesday.

Tho New Zealand Cricket Council has iappointed T. C. Lowry captain and manager of the Now Zealand team for tho tour of England. M. L. Page has been appointed vicecaptain, and C. F. W. Allcott treasurer.

The selection committeo for tho tour ■will be Lowry, Page, Allcott. In the course of a statement regarding tho appointments the New Zealand Council says:—" The committee has considered the necessity of keeping tho cost of tho tour as low as possible and is satisfied that tho arrangements will enable the tour to go through without loss of efficiency. Tho selectors made a recommendation that a fifteenth man should be taken, but the committeo has decided to limit tho team to fourteen men."

NO SURPRISE APPOINTMENTS.

FINANCIAL ASPECT OF TOUR.

The appointment of Lowry as captain and Pago as vice-captain of tlio New Zealand cricket team was generally anticipated and will not occasion any surprise. Lowry was captain of the last New Zealand team which visited England four years ago. Page, who has had considerable experience in representative cricket as a captain successfully led the Canterbury toam to victory in Plunket Shield matches this season. Both ho and Allcott were members of the last Now Zealand toain which toured England. On that occasion C. C. Dacre, who now plays for Gloucestershire, was vice-captain. The appointment of Lowry as manager also was 1 not altogether unexpected although in several quarters Allcott was favoured for this position in the event of t]i.o New Zealand Council appointing a member of the team. It was generally considered that tho chairman of the New Zoaland Cricket Council, Mr. A. T. Donnelly, would accompany the team as manager. It is very evident, that the council in making the appointments has had in view tho financial aspect of tho tour. Otherwise with a player-manager selected another player would have been taken with tho team.

ANOTHER PLAYER URGED.

BURDEN OF DOUBLE POSITION.

Commenting; on the appointment of T. C. Lowry, captain of the New Zealand team, to tho position of manager, Mr, E. E. Nalder, chairman of the management committee of the Auckland' Cricket Association, stated at last evening's meeting that he considered tho team would be overburdened by tho captain occupying the double position, and ho suggested that an additional player might be taken. Mr. H. Duncan supported this view and it was unanimously decided to telegraph to the New Zealand Council urging it to consider the advisability of sending an additional player on the tour in view of the council's decision to appoint a playerq?»nager.

THE ENGLISH SELECTORS.

' , APPOINTMENT NOT YET MADE. (Received March 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. March 9. The Board of Cricket Control has postponed until April 8 tho appointment o[ a selection committee for the New Zealand test match hi June, but it decided that tho committee, when appointed, shall act for two yearg, and shall select the Rest of England team against the champion county The Daily Telegraph's sporting writer expresses regret at the delay in the appointment of the selectors. He says the time has surely come for a change in the chairmanship, in spite of Mr. H. D. G. Leveson-Gower's great work for cricket. No game has changed so much in recent years, consequently it is essential that the selectors should he in actual touch with it through experience. A committee comprising Messrs. F. T. Mann (Middlesex), G. Jackson, the Derbyshire captain, and J. C. White (Somerset) would satisfy the increasing number of pities of the selectors.

WEST INDIES TEAM.

EXPERIENCES IN AUSTRALIA.

DIFFICULT SPIN BOWLING.

[by telegratii.—PßESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The West Indies cricket team arrived at Wellington to-day from Sydney. "We were rather disappointed with our batting when up against spin bowlers—indeod, we felt very unhappy against them," remarked Mr. J. E. Scheult, assistant manager, when spoaking of the team's experiences on its first tour of Australia. Mr. Scheult explained that members of the team at first found C. V. Grimmett very difficult, but later became more confident facing him. All recognised that he was n first-class bowler. Ironmonger, too, had been very difficult, especially on tho Molbourtie ground, where the wicket was very sticky. The Sydney ground did not have the same terrors for the team, as was shown by the performance in the last match.

"But for the spin bowlers I think we would have done exceptionally well," said the visitor, "and it was shown at the end of the tcur that we were a much improved batting sitlo. We were disappointed to some extent with the pitches, which were not as fast as we had been led to expect. Wo found the Sydney wicket to ho the fastest. The wickets in the West Indies, however, are considerably faster than those in Australia." The members of the West Indies team were the gues'.s of the Wellington Cricket 'Association to-day, and were taken for a motor drive.
