MORE BOYS THAN GIRLS.
NATURE RESTORES LOSSES. SURPLUS OF ONE A DAY. More boys have been born during tho last ten years in England and Wales than in any previous ten years. Thero is always a slight preponderance of boys, but birth statistics for 1919-1920 show an unparalleled increase. The highest point was reached in 1919, immediately after the war, when 1060 boys wero born to every 1000 gii ls. Since then the number of boys born to every 1000 girls has been:—l92o, 1052; 1921, 1051; 1922, 1049; 1923, 1044; 1924, 1046. 1925, 1045; 1926, 1041; 1927, 1042; 1928, 1042; 1929., 1043.
The total number of boys born between 1919 and 1929 was 4,478,076, which is nearly three-quarters of a million more than tho number of girls. "It is a definite scientific fact that more boys are born after every great war, to balanco the proportion of tho population," a leading authority on eugenics said. "In fact, if tho infant mortality continues to bo reduced, there will be a definite shortage of wives in 20 to 30 years."
