FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.

The following are extracts from the New Zealand Heuald of February 3.7, 1881:

\esterday a poll of the ratepayers of the city of Auckland was'taken on the question of whether or ■ otherwise it was desirable to have tramways constructed in the city. The poll resulted as follows:—For tramways, 319; against, 16. A small shipment of cheese is being sent to England by the Otaki as an experiment. If it" is profitable regular shipments will follow.

At the last meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Laby, of Victoria, in referring to the shipment of frozen meat and butter by the s.s. Protos, said a largo cargo of meat was placed in a cool-air chamber, and 200 tons of butter in water tanks underneath it. The result of the whole was that both were landed perfectly fresh in London, and sold at a very large profit. The butter cost on board was sid- per lb., and sold in London for Is per lb., and, as the freight cost only 3£d a lb., it would be -seen that a very large profit could be realised. The effect of this successful experiment was, to his mind, a proof that, before long, Australia and New Zealand would have ships trading to and fro specially fitted by their owners for carrying prepared provisions to England, and this must result in great benefit to these colonies.
