OCEAN FLOOR MOVED.

THEORY OF EARTHQUAKE.

LAVA UNDER NORTH ISLAND

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 9,

Captain T. J. J. See, Government astronomer at the Mare Island naval station, says the New Zealand earthquake was caused by the shifting of the ocean bed, incidental to the formation of an enormous new mountain range in the Western Pacific, similar to tho Andes of South America.

" Running diagonally from New Zealand almost to San Francisco there is *» trough of water about four miles deep," ho said. " The pressure of the water pushing up the ocean floor in one direction and leakage of water from the trough into tho hot lava below creates steam, which forces tho lava up under the North Island, A similar condition exists off Alaska."
