IMPUDENT OFFENCE.
PUNISHMENT OF ACCUSED.
" A particularly impudent crime, carefully planned and callous," was Mr. Justice Smith's description of the offence of Howard Williams (30), who camo up for sentence in the Supremo Court yesterday on an admitted charge of false pretences. Tho method by which accused obtained a sum of £IOO, said His Honor, was especially ingenious and impudent. Ho had published an advertisement stating that a manager was required for a plantation at Fiji and when soineono answered ho had required tho £IOO to bo paid down by tho applicant. This person consulted a solicitor, but accused was ablo to bluff tho solicitor sufficiently for his purpose. Accused went to Sydney and thoro secured tho payment of his fare back to Auckland, whero he got in league with others in tho hope of duping someone else by tho samo method. Probation was out of tbo question, and accused would bo ordered to undergo 18 months' roformativo detontion.
