HERALD RELIEF FUND.

> DONATIONS POUR IN. appeal of the 'disaster WIDESPREAD SYMPATHY SHOWN. If evidence wero needed of the eagerness of all sections of the community to do something toward the immediate relief of sufferers in the earthquake calamity that evidence is forthcoming in the rapidly mounting subscription list opened by the Herald and Auckland Weekly News. . This has reached a splendid figure after an invitation made by the proprietors only throe days ago. Realising the extreme urgency of the situation, private people, business houses, factory employees and even children are giving gladly in order* that some measure of relief may be sent to the afflicted districts with the utmost despatch. The very real crushing calamity which has befallen the people of Hawke's Bay has created a desire to be of help, which goes far boyond the bounds of the Dominion.

Testimony to the concern of people over the seas is amply demonstrated in a cablegram which the South British Insurance Company, Limited, received yesterday from its Johannesburg manager, Mr. H. W. Johnson, who requested headquarters at Auckland to pay into the Herald fund the sum* of £SO on his behalf. .

A keepsake is a treasured possession, 1 yet a woman who had retained for 10 ■ years a half-sovereign given her when she • left her old home, has handed the coin 1 to the Herald with the comment: "1 feel now th»t I shall never need it." How the staffs of commercial firms are , responding is shown in a letter from a shipping agent, who advised that his employees were making a weekly contribution. He added that the crews of two of his ships, coastal vessels, had expressed their intention of making a deduction from their wages in order that they, too, may show practical sympathy. HAVELOCK NORTH SUFFERS. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE TRAFFIC BRIDGE WRECKED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] * NAPIER. Friday. Considerable damage has been caused in Havelock North by the earthquake. The most apparent work of the upheaval is to be seen in the vicinity of the traffic bridge giving access to Havelock North from Napier. This is completely down.. It dropped from both ends and the centre was thus allowed to crumble.

A small foot bridge has been thrown across the bed of the stream below, but it will be some time before the bridge will be available for traffic again as it will have to be completely reconstructed. The watermain on the side of the bridge was left suspended and gangs were employed this morning in erecting trestles beneath it to take the weight. The steep banks above the water have broken away, leaving huge gaping cracks. Part of the bank has been thrust completely into the stream. The bank at one part took with it a largo shed. The township has suffered considerably, although the damage is not to be compared with that at Napier and Hastings, j
