DROUGHT IN AMERICA.
A SERIOUS POSITION. WHEAT AREAS AFFECTED. WASHINGTON. Feb. 5. The devastating and unprecedented drought of 1930 persists. The reports of the Department of Agricalture characterised tho ending on Wednesday as one of the driest and warmest on record this seasorf. The lack of moisture in the large areas, ©specially as it relates to the subsoil, continues very acute, especially from Missis?ippi Valley eastward over Ohio and the Potomac drainage basins. Arkansas reports that there has been no rainfall of any consequence. Oklahoma, an important wheat State, reports no rail) for the soil and that moisture is short. Tennessee is dry. Kentucky has had light showers. Much of ,the winter wheat belt is without the protecting cover of snow, yet tho department says the winter .wheat is folding up remarkably well. Mr. Legge, chairman of the Federal Farm Board, declared that a shortage of wheat in the Unit-ed States was entirely possible if the drought continues.
