ORIENTAL RUGS.

COLOUR EFFECT. Antique ' oriental carpets are usually accepted as tho standard of excellence for colour and design. But many of the colour effects obtained aro duo to accident rathor than to plan. Somo of the bits of wool liave faded moro than others, somo have turned pinker, bluer or yellower with the passing of tho years, so that, instead of possessing a flat colour background, as was probably intended by tho designer, they have a very beautiful "stipple" effect. This same effect can be obtained quite easily by tho modern rugmaker at home by purchasing your turkey rug wool for tho background in two or three tones of tho same shade, and, after cutting the wool, mixing tho threo together and working into tho rug. Equal quantities of blue, red-blue and green-blue look particularly effective when worked, and there are, of course, many moro variations.
