During tho Soudan War a railway which was laid across the desert by the British was a source of immense interest and excitement to the Arabs, who would stand and stare for hours together at the long line of rails. When the trains came up with the engine puffing and steaming, with tho heavy trucks rumbling behind it, the amazement of the simple tribesmen became greater and greater. They believed the engine to bo a real living animal of some wondrous kind and one kind-hearted sheik v . s shocked at the great weights this poor animal was forced to draw. " You will kill your animal if you force it to drag such loads in the hot sun," said tho chief to the engine-driver. "Hear how the poor creature pants!" But tho driver only laughed and fed his animal with more, coal!
