WAGES AND OTHER COSTS.
Sir,—ln the Heeald of February 3 Mr. E. C. Simmons states that Mr. Earls Vaile says nothing to disprove his statement that wages are a, less important, factor in the cost of production, etc. 1 am giving here the actual wages paid last, season for the production of one ton of New Zealand flax fibre. Expenses other than wages wereßoyalty for flax, & s * a ton; nine (tons of leaf to one ton_ot| fibre, £2 14s; oil and tractor*for carting leaf, 10s; power, £t 8s; insurance, Its interest and depreciation,.£3 10s; nprse' and dray, 7s; incidentals, 10s—a tola of other expenses of £9 9s. -Wages were. —Cutting side feaf, nine tons at IZSi 8s; driving tractor, 14s; stripper-Keep ' £1; benchloader, 14s: washer, towey, 12s; tailcutter. 9»; sort® A rou sea bout, 12s: paddocker, £1 ' scutcher, £1 12s; carting to landing, management, 10s —a wages total o 19s. For hook-cutting at 7s a ton working expenses would have I)een less, or £ll 14s. In the Manaiwta£ trict the wages set by the Arbi , Court was 15s and 16s a ton , leaf cutting. This would have in^ the wages bill by £1 7s to £1
