Charges of stealing a steamer ticket

Detective-Sergeant Kelly said it was tolleged accused stole a steamer ticket to Sydney from another man and later received a .refund of the passage money jrom' the shipping company. Witnesses ;would be called to prove that he told the
shipping company that his wife and child
been killed in the Hawke's Bay earthquake and fbr that reason he had decided not to proceed to Sydney. James Harty said that on Thursday he
looked a passage to Australia by the JJlimaroa. Later the same day he spent about three hours drinking in. a city hotel, where he met accused and two other men. Witness had at least seven or eight drinks, but was not intoxicated. After leaving the hotel he discovered that his gteamer ticket was missing. Counsel: I suggest you were very drunk, i Witness: I walked home and had enough dense to keep £4O which I had on me. Counsel: If the two men who were with you, stated on oath that you gave the ticket to accused to cash for you, would you deny it? Witness: I would not swear either way. Tha case was adjourned until Monday.
