HERALD RELIEF FUND.

LIST GROWING RAPIDLY.

APPEAL TO CITIZENS.

RELIEF OF SUFFERERS.

MONEY NEEDED URGENTLY. How deeply citizens of Auckland are feeling for the sufferers in the earthquake disaster is shown by the spontaneous response being made from all quarters since relief ljsts were opened. On all sides expressions of sympathy aro taking practical form by contributions, in proportion as people are able, to funds now being established throughout the city and province. .'Jho directors of Wilson and Horton, Limited, opened a fund on Wednesday with a donation ol 250 guineas, and at the end of the first day further contributions raised the sum to £616 2s 6d, Appreciative of the urgent need for prompt relief of the sufferers, many citizens have forwarded contributions which, at the close of the second day of the Herald's appeal, moie than trebled the first day's total.

As details com*. to hand the extreme plight of the stricken area assumes a graver aspect. Terrible enough in its earlier impressions the calamity daily reveals added havoc and suffering more widespread. Peoplo who have not been directly brought face to face with the death and destruction which have visited the ruined districts are nevertheless suffering in spirit with the bereaved and the homeless. The opportunity, then, to do something to help is being eagerly grasped. Money is needed. The situation calls for - the generosity which is ever associated with the people of Auckland. .The list reveals the 6pirit of anxiety to assist. Tho staff of the Herald and the Auckland Weekly News met yesterday and agreed to make a contribution of per cent, on weekly salaries for a period of four weeks. Among several large donations by business firms and private persons stand a number which represent the sympathy of many upon whom tho times press weightily. Self-denial is being shown by factory employees who have willingly abandoned this year's picnics and transferred funds accumulated for that purpose to tha relief of sufferers in the disaster. Then - there is the contribution of an English visitor, whose subscription of a treasury, note nominally of £5 has been cashed by a. bank for £5 7s 6d as a result of the ruling exchange rate. Contributions forwarded to' the Herald and Weekly News fund will be acknowledged daily in the columns of the Heuald. During the two days in which the fund has been open the following amounts have been received:—

BEAUTIFUL HOMES HAZED.

SCENE AT HAVELOCK NORTH.

FORMER PICTURESQUE VILLAGE

[bit TELZGHAni. —SPECIAL RErORTER.] PALMEBSTON NORTH, Thursday.

The picturesque village of Havelock North presents a desolate scene. Hardly a shop is standing at any one of the corners of the six roads that met there. Tho ivy-covered village church has escaped practically without damage, but many of the beautiful homes in the district have been almost razed to the ground. The large wooden bridge on tho Hastings Road lias collapsed for about 50 yards of its length, .#id it lies, a broken and twisted wreckage, in tho old riverbed, 40 feet, below. The 12in. water main which crosses the riverbed on high iron trestles at'this point is fractured and bent into a wavy line..
