MEMBER REPEATS CHARGES.

TRIAL CF GENERAI. bUTLEi?

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright,

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4.

' An open hearing of the charges against Major-General Smedley Butler in respect of his statements about the Prime Minister of Italy, Signor Mussolini, was demanded in the Senate to-day by Mr. J. T. Heflin, Democrat member for Alabama, " in the name of justice and fair play." Mr. Heflin read a statement published in an anti-Fascist paper in New York declaring that General Butler's charge that Signor Mussolini ran over a child without stopping was true. - " Let tho American people sit on the trial and let us know if this mad monarch is to have the world kowtowing to him," said Mr. Heflin. The member proceeded to assert that an American Consul in Italy had been beaten during a Fascist parade but no apology was made by Italy. " When they struck him they struck the Government. They spat orj the flag but they did noh apologise" concluded Mr. Heflin.
