BOXER INDEMNITY.
EXPENDITURE BY CHINA.
£3,000,000 IN BRITAIN. MATERIAL FOR RAILWAYS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received January 22, 5.45 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, Jan. 21. The Chinese Government will spend £3,000,000 of the Boxer indemnity in Britain on railway equipment for the rehabilitation of the Chinese railways. Iri the course of a debate in the House of Commons on the second reading of a bill representing the agreement with China on the indemnity question, Mr. H. Dalton, Foreign Under-Secretary, explained that a sum of £3.500.000 lying in a bank at Shanghai is to be transferred to London. An educational grant of £265,000 is to be paid to the Hongkong University and £200,000 to the London committee of the Chinese University, and the balance is to be paid to. the Chinese Government's purchasing commission in London, which will spend £3,000,000 in the rehabilitation and improvement of the Chinese railways. In reviewing recent events in China Mr. Dalton said that generally speaking the position of the Nanking Government had been greatly strengthened. The rebellion of the north-west provinces seemed now to be definitely at an end. Complete harmony appeared to exist between the President of the Republic, Chiang Kai-shek, and the Government of Manchuria and determined efforts were being made to suppress the outbreak of organised banditry which occurred last year in the interior.
