TROTTING NOTES.

TRAINING WORK AT EPSOM.

CINDER TRACK! IN- USE. , _______ l NATIVE' PRINCE GOES SOUTH, j 'V i ' : V' I *'; Although (ho Northland trotting meeting; is only, a week off, there was r.ot much; lifo in the training operations ;if, Alexandra. Park ■ yesterday. Owing to heavy "raiir' having put the dirt track out of commission, the cinder track was used by those who gave their charges useful tasks. •'

Gold Jacket, looking well after his flip! to Wellington, was' given strong joggilis exercise. His trainer, L. McMahon, has decided to keep him going now that ho is showing a return to form, and Gold Jacket will bo a competitor in the principal events at the Auckland February meeting. L. McMahon attempted to send Mignonnc. away from a standing start from the twomile.? post, but she gave a good deal of trouble, before finally setting out. on the journey. Mignonno was allowed to run along steadily, showing 2.40 for the first mile. Tho pace was then increased, the next half-milo being covered in 1.15. and sho completed the two miles in 5.5, recording 1.10 for the concluding half-mile. Considering tho extra distance covered, Mignonno's final mile was a good effort Carnui, in harness, accompanied Nella Dillon in 6olid work over three circuits. Both paced resolutely. Carnui acting , the rolo of pacemakor. A Nixon's pacer ran tho final mile in 2.30, Nella Dillon traversing a further half-mile -at a 2.40, gait. Nella Dillon relished her task and was staying on in good style at the end. Special Bell Improving. Benefice, unhoppled. executed a useful task over several laps, bat . whs not' aske'l (o show her best speed. She" is carrying a good deal of condition as the result' of her let-up sinco Christmas aud will not be a competitor at Whangarei. Chrystal and Kewpie's Triumph were associated in a milo and' a-half work-out, goiiie the reverse way round. Chrystal had the advantage in the early'stages, but, as the milo was passed in 2.43, Kewpie's Triumph was handy. Negotiating tho turns in improved style. Kewpie's Triumph, was well clc-ar of his stable mate at tho finish in 3.55, running his final half-mile in 1.12 and going comfortably. Kewpie's Triumph was worked wide out, and the improved manner in which ho handled the bends suggests that ,on the big track at "Whangarei J. Gee's colt will race well.

Worthy Chief and Special Bell were companions in sound work, and, excepting for one Blight, mistake. Special Bell gave a neat display. Although Special Bell has not been in. work .long, he haß made good progress for A, J. Julian. ■ . • . Dan Direct, free-legged, and Great Fame ran along together for 10 furlongs, when Great Fame began to tire, leaving Dan Direct to go on another four furlongs alone. Great Fame paced boldly in his effort, while Dan Direct gave a 6ound exhibition of freelegged pacing. i Dan Direct ran 14 furlongs at a 2.40 clip. Glandore's. Injury. , Glandore is Buffering from an injury to his leg and has had to bo stopped in his work. This is hard luctf for. the connections of Glandore, who have kept him going in the hope of winning a race. After his showing at Epsom last month his chances of picking up a prize at the Northland meeting appeared to be fairly good. E. J. Humphreys, trainer of Harold Logan, has returned to Epsom, where he will supervise Pageant's preparation for next month's meeting. Pageant has done a lot of useful work during Humphreys' absence and is in good order to undertake more serious tasks. Harold Logan has gone south to rest on his laurels. Since April Harold Logan has won. £3790 in stakes. > C. Fairman, who drove Native Prince in fho New Zealand Gold Cup, has 'returned to Epsom and taken Warplane in hand again. Warspite is also to rejoin the stable next week. "Warplane; who was given light exercise yesterday, looks well after the short respite. Native Prince has gone south and wi}l in future be trained by J. J. Kennerley. Native Prince has not raced well lately, but a return to his best form would gain him further success.

MATAMATA TRACK ITEMS. PROGRESS OF VALREINA. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] MATAMATA, Thursday. After having had a good spell, Red Comet was recently' placed in work again under the care of R. Martin. However, he became lame almost immediately,' and. as ho was unsound previously,'there seems little hope of him elanding- another preparation. . When J. H. Dufty returned to Matamata after the recent meeting • at Thames • bo parted with Sports King and. Glittering Gold, who were sent back to their respective owners. R. Martin has augmented his team by the inclusion of the jumper Slump, who. was at one time trained by A. Julian at Ellerslie. Members of R. Martin's team in Queen Val, Nassono and Valreina appear to have benefited by recent racing. If they continue to train on the right way, they. nifty all be possibilities at the forthcoming Matamata meeting. Valreina especially should be a good prospect, as.she was unfortunate on her trip to Ellerslie for the summer carnival. , ~ - .•? The .latest additions to.-J. 11. Andprton's team are Kiritahangav by Racefnl—Tarnahinc, and a two-year-old by Lapidary from a Maniapoto mare. All going well in tlit meantime, it i's intended to give Kiritahanga an outing at tho local meeting next month.

The handsomo cabinet; of cutlery which is to accompany the'stakd for tho Hack Cup nl tho Matamala meeting has been 011 view in a local shop window and litis teen much admired. Tho nddition of this fino tl'ophy to the stake will givo tho race an added attraction and a good.field is anticipated.
