STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
ELECTRICAL DISTURBANCES. VALUABLE COWS KILLED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Friday. Three valuable dairy cows were lost by Mr. W. Dobson, of Maungatapere, through their being struck by lightning. The herd was being driven to the milking shed, where, after a dazzling flash, four of the animals were seen to be lying on tho ground. Investigation showed that three had been killed outright but the fourth recovered after half an hour. News has been received that as the result of a severe electrical disturbance on Wednesday afternoon a large kauri tree on the property of Mr. A. Ariell, at Mareretu, was completely shattered by a vivid flash of lightning, pieces of timber being thrown for some distance. Ihe treo also caught fire and is slowly burning away.
