WELLINGTON "DOUBLE"

THE CUP AND TELEGRAPH. BEARING OF ELLERSLIE FORM. COMPARISON OF HANDICAPS. The Wellington Cup and the Telegraph Handicap, the leading handicap events on the first day of tho Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting, form a combination that will attract great interest now that the weights have been declared. Particular attention will be directed to the six hovses engaged in the cup who ran in the Auckland Cup. They are Nightmarch. Concentrate (third). Star Stranger. Gay Crest (second), In the Shade and Count Palatine.

The principal feature of tho weights of these six horses is tho l'iso of Gay Crest consequent upon his notable performances at Ellerslio. The position is illustrated in tho following tablo, giving a comparison of the Auckland Cup and Wellington Clip handicaps : W'gtn. A'kld. DifferCup. Cup. cnno. Nightmarch .. 9.12 9.1:) lib. Concentrate . . 9.0 8.13 lib. Star Stranger . 8.10 8.13 ;!lh. Gay Crest . . 8.0 7.1 22li>. Tu the Shade . 8.3 8.3 Count Palatine 7.0 7.1 lib. Form in A.R.C. Handicap, Gay Crest, is, therefore, set to meet the other Hvo on 221b. to 2311). worse terms. With the exception of Nightmarch they were all included in the A.R.C, Handicap field when Gay Crest scored a very decisive victory. On that occasion the winner carried 8.0; Concentrate. 9.-1; Star Stranger, 9.2; In the Shade. 8.7; and CountPalatine, 7.4. In addition. My Own. who ran third in the A.R.C. Handicap with 7.0, has been given 7.1 in the Wellington Cup, and Goshawk, who ran unplaced with 7.12, has been weighted at 7.7. Gay Crest thus meets My Own on 111b, worse terms. Concentrate, In the Shade and Count Palatine 131b., Goshawk 141b. and Star Stranger 15lb. On tho face of these adjustments Gay Crest looks to bo set a difficult task, but he might well be equal to it. Last season Concentrate, after winning the Auckland Cup, with 7.10, went on to win the Wellington Cup with 8.10. As the outstanding handicap performer at the recent Ellerslie meeting Gay Crest must be given a good ohnnco of going on to still further success at Wellington. Historic and Cylinder. Besides the horses who raced in the leading handicaps at Ellerslio there are a number of other notable performers in the Wellington Cup. Among these are Historic. winner of the Manawatu Cup with 9.9, who has now heen awarded 9.3. Cylinder, Merry Damon and Royal Parade, wintier of the Wairarapa Cup. Special interest may be centred in Cylinder's chance of following in the footsteps of Rapine, who won as a three-year-old in 1923. with 7.12. Cylinder has been given his weight-for-age, 8.0. Runners in the Sprint. Form in tho sprint events at Ellerslie also has an important bearing on the Telegraph Handicap prospects. Hunting Cry, winner of the Railway Handicap, with 8.12. has 9.7 in the Telegraph Handicap, a rise of 9lb. Paganelli, who was unplaced in tho Railway with 8.5, but won the Electric Handicap with 8.7 on the second day. has 8.13, with which he should have a good chance if he goes on in the right way. Con sent and Meadow Lark are solid horses, capable of running good races, although at his best Paganelli would be expected to beat them at the weights. Bayacre and Hunting Day are a likely pair in the middle of tho handicap, especially Bayacre. whose becond to Lady Quex at Ellerslie was a good effort. On that occasion he carried 7.13 and now with 8.0 he looks a good prospect. There are a number of possibilities among the lightweights Details of the Weights.
