TACTICS IN NORMAL PLAY.
TIY MAJOR TEN'ACE
I arn setting this week some problems in the ordinary technique of play. They :: : Hit crop up in any deal, and thoso who try them should see if they can find the solution during the half minute usually allowed under conditions of actual play. S-K J 9 3: Pl—B 6. D—7 4 2. C—9 63 2. Y A B Z S-Q 10 8 2. H—A 73. j D-A Q J 10. C —A Q. At lo\e scores Z deals and bids one no trump and all pass. A leads the two of hearts. How should Z plan tho play of tho two hands?
Z is making a contract of one no trump at love score, and A leads the six of spades. Dummy plays the five; B, the king; and Z, the two. At trick 2 B leads tho seven of spades and Z plays the nine. What should A play and why ? Last week's problem was as follows: At love score in the rubber game Y deals and bids one no trump; B, two diamonds; Z, two spades, and all pass. Ihe hands of B and dummy are as follows :
A leads a small diamond. B wins with the jack and leads ace and king, all following suit. What should B lead to trick 4 and why ? Solution: If A holds the ace of trumps, the king once guarded, or the queen and two others, game is safe and B need not. worry. Also if A does not hold a trump honour, then game is lost and no amount of worry on B's part will avail to save it. But it is just possible that Z overealled on six spades to the ace-king or seven to the ace-queen. If so, then A holds either the queen of spades once guarded or the king bare. If A has either of these two holdings then B can save the game by one play and one play only. He must lead his thirteenth diamond. If Z ruffs low then A can over-ruff; if Z ruffs high then A's honour will be good.
