ARREST OF SUSPECT.
ESCAPE TEN MONTHS AGO.
SEVERAL CHARGES PENDING.
An Australian, who has been wanted for the past ten months by the Auckland police, following his escape from the custody of the Salvation Army while he was on remand, was arrested at a house in College Hill yesterday morning The man, Reginald Kennedy, appeared in the Police Court before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., ten months ago on a charge of stealing a cash-box containing money from a shop in Newton Road. The police asked for a remand in order that further inquiries about Kennedy might be made, and this was granted by the magistrate. Staff-Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, said he was prepared to look after accused in the Army home until the police were ready to proceed with the case, and Kennedy was handed over to his charge. The same night Kennedy left the home. Since he disappeared r.o trace was seen of him until a few days ago,' when it was believed he had returned to Auckland. When it was suspected that Kennedy had returned to the city, one of his associates was watched by Acting-Detective Hamilton, who followed him to a house in College Hill. The detective caught _a glimpse of Kennedy, but was not certain of his identity. Detective-Sergeant Issell, of the records department, Detective Stevenson and Acting-Detective Hamilton visited the house yesterday morning, and Kennedy was arrested. He will be brought before the Police Court this morning, when several charges will be preferred.
