Frederick Sleigh Roberts was born at Cawnpore, India, in 1832. At the age of 26 valour won for him the reward most valued by all soldiers. A baronetcy honoured his services in Afghanistan, where his victorious march to Kandahar had fired the popular imagination. Upon retirement from the proud position of Commander-in-Chief in India in 1892, Sir Frederick was raised to the Peerage.
