SURPRISE IN SPRINT.

SUCCESS OF BILLIKINS. j

IN THE LEAD THROUGHOUT.

ROYAL RULER RUNS SECOND.

There was a surpnsj in the Flying Handicap when Billikina, an outsider, downed ♦.lie favourite Royal Ruler," who had a good call over Sir Russell and Hampton Park in the betting.

Billikina found her feet quickly, to lead alone the back from Tho Jack Jumper. Royal Ruler and Hampton Park. With two furlongs covered Hampton Park and Royal Ruler ran up just behind Billikina, and they followed her round tho home turn, where Abbess and Lady's Boy were closest of the others. In tho run home Billikina stayed on to win by half a length from Royal Ruler. Sir Russell was-a head away third, and Hampton Park was almost in line fourth. Next cam.! Abbess and Lady's Boy. Good handling by H Wiggins enabled Billikina just to pull through from Royal Ruler, whose rider was all over him at the finish. Sir Russell finished very fast on the extreme outside, but Hampton Park weakened in the last 100 yds., evidently being in need of tho race. Lady's Boy was carried out very wide at tho turn by Abbess, otherwise ho would havo been handy, as he was making a good run at the time.

THE HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP

BRAMPTON BEATS PATUTAHI

Investors were well on tho spot when they supported Patutalii and Brampton best in tlie High-weight Handicap, as they finished first and second, although in reverse order to that in which they were backed, Brampton winning nicely. Patutalii, Foxhound and Marble King were quickest to begin and they were tor gether for over a furlong, when Marble King went on in the lead, to make play along the back from Foxhound, Patutalii, Master Armour ;ind Bizarro. . Running to tho top Steady Firo and Brampton moved up and Marble King held only a slight advantage at the home' turn from Patutahi, Brampton, Master Armour and Steady Firo. Brampton finished on well under tho whip to beat Patutahi by a length. Marble King was three lengths away third and First Lap several lengths back fourth. Noxt to cross the line were Master Armour arid Arch Eagle.

Horsemanship on tho part of F. Foster was a big factor in Brampton's success. Brampton never had to leave the rails until reaching tho straight and ho had a good finishing run left after being carefully nursed. Patutahi and Marble King both ran good races, but the others were all well beaten, although Arch Eaglo was running on at tho end after being last early.
