STORAGE OF CHLORATES.
REDUCING FIRE RISK.
The fire risk attaching to tho storage of chlorates should be realised by farmers and others using sodium or calcium chlorate for weed-killing purposes. These materials evolve oxygen when heated, thus very much increasing tho intensity of a possible fire. Hoxes and bags which have contained theso materials aro also liable to bo highly inflammable owing to impregnation. Tho Stato Fire Office suggests, in the current issue of tho Journal of Agriculture, that chlorates (and all other oxidising materials) should be stored in bins, preferably of concrete or brick; zinc should not bo used. Containers which have held these materials should not bo stored, but destroyed as soon as empty. Care*,should bo taken to keep chlorates well away from such substances as starch, sugar, gum, sulphur, fertilisers containing blood and bono, mineral acids and dust. Caro should also bo taken to keep floors clean and free from spilled chlorates, us friction may causa ignition*
