OTAGO HARBOUR CHANNEL.
REMOVAL WITH EXPLOSIVES.
PORT NICHOLSON MISHAP.

DUXEDIN", Thursday
Preparations for removing a small section of rock near the channel at Quarantine Island are now being made by Mr, Goodman, contractor, of Gisborne. The rock in question has proved a dangerous obstruction to largo vessels when cominc up and returning down the harbour from Dunedin. The last vessel to foul the rock was tho I'ort Nicholson, which touched twico and had tho blades of her propellers damaged in consequence. Some timo ago the Harbour Boa id let the contract for tho removal of tho rock to Mr. Goodman, and ho brought the scow Kaiaia from the north sorno weeks ago. Tho work will bo carried out from tho dock of this vessel. The contractor is at present fitting up tho boring plant on tho Ivaiain. This will bo used to drill holes in tho rock before the necessary explosives are used. All the plant was brought from Gisborne by tho scow. It is expected that boring operations will bo commenced during the next few days. Special moorings havo been laid down closo to tho rock to bo removed, and tho Kaiaia will bo moored there while the boring operations are in progress.
