EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of January 7, 1881: News comes to hand of further disfurb. ances in Ireland. A largo' crowd of people had assembled at a farm near Olaremorris in order to prevent the service of a notice of ejectment of 'the tenant. A body of police was despatched to the scene of the disturbance the people were Ordered to disperse. Upon their refusing to do this, the police charged with fixed bayonets upon the rioters, several of whom were severely wounded in the struggle which ensued. As a sign that the times are not as bad as they are represented to be, bricklayers can scarcely be obtained in Tiniaru at the present, time and those who are out of work refuse 12s a day, holding out for 15s. No information is yet available from Government quarters concerning customs revenue, but it is understood that items will be fully up to the estimate, except railways, which, judging from the last accounts, are still much behind. Indeed, they will have to make up a very large arrear during ,the next three months even to approadh"*€he'Treasurer's estimate of £950,000.
