OBITUARY.

MR. EDWIN ROBINSON.

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MAN

The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Edwin Robinson, a well-known Auckland business man, and founder of tho Robinson Ice Cream Company, Limited. Mr. Robinson was born in Lancashire, England, 54 years ago, and came to New Zealand at tho age of 35. Settling in Auckland, he decided to follow the same trade his father had pursued in England, that of an ice cream manufacturer and vendor. He started business in Victoria Street in a very modest way, having only ono churn and a little handcart, which he wheeled round the city with his goods. Tho business prospered rapidly and after a short period Mr. Robinson moved to larger premises in Archhill, where, a few years later, the concern expanded to such an extent that the work became too much for one man, and Mr. J. W. Bentley joined Mr. Robinson in partnership. Mr. Robinson led a very active life and put all his time and energy into the business, frequently working from 12 to 16 hours a day. Splendid assistance was also rendered by Mrs. Robinson, who went to work with her husband at four o'clock each morning, before the business was formed into a company. In 1922, in order to cope with everincreasing output, it was decided to turn the undertaking into a private company with a capital of £6OOO. A public company with a capital of £50,000 was incorporated three years later. Although changed in status, the business always benefited from the knowledge and guidance of its founder. Over a year ago Mr. Robinson became ill, but, in spite of ill-health, he retained his position as manager of the company. He is survived by his wife and a young son. MR. JAMES HENDERSON. A veteran of the Maori wars and an old resident of tho Tiiak.au district, Mr. James Henderson, died at his residence, Jellicoe Avenue, Tuakau, on Tuesday. Mr. Henderson was born at sea in 1843, on a ship travelling from Scotland to Victoria. He spent his first years in Australia, coming to New Zealand with his' parents and other members of the family in 1857. Shortly after landing, the Maori War broke out, Mr. Henderson seeing military service at tho age of 18 years. For about 50 years his business and farming interests were in the Clevedon district and later in Tuakau. Mr. Henderson, who was always a keen worker and supporter of the Presbyter-, ian Church, is survived by four sons, Messrs. John R. Henderson, of Epsom; James W. Henderson, of Onewhero; Henry W. Henderson, of Tc Kawa; and Frank A. Henderson, of Te Mawhai; and two daughters, Mrs. H. Luke, of Epsom; and Mrs. A. Hamilton, of Tuakau. There are 20 grandchildren. MR. S. S. CAMPBELL. The death has occurred of Mr. Samuel Sidney Campbell, a well-known resident of Whakatane. Mr. Campbell was born in Oruru, Mangonui, in 1867, and lived in North Auckland for the greater part of his >life, moving to Whakatane a comparatively short time ago. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Owen and Graham, and Archibald' Clark and Sons, Limited, Auckland, he was successively manager for Messrs. Brown, Campbell and Company, Mangawhare, A. E. Harding and Company, Limited, and Wairoa Stores, Limited, Dargaville, and Messrs. Nobels' property at Maraetai. Later he purchased the business known as the Whakatane Hardware Company. In these various positions ho proved himself a capable business man. Mr. Campbell took an active part in the work of the Church of England, serving as a member of tho vestry and choir in both the Dargaville and Whakatane churches.
