RAILWAY OFFICER RETIRES.
DISTRICT ENGINEER.
MR. J. K. LOWE'S LONG SERV ICE
Having served for over 43 years in tl 9 Railway Department, Mr. J. K. Lcve, district engineer in Auckland for the pact seven years, will retire on superannuation at the end of this month. The period of Mr. Lowe's service in Auckland as district engineer has been an important one and a number of major works have been brought to completion under Mr. Lowe's direction.
Air. Lowe was born in Wellington and joined the railway service as an engineering cadet in 1890. He became assistcptdistrict engineer in Auckland in ISG4 and district engineer at Ohakune in 1903. Ha held this latter post for six years and was then transferred to the West Coast as district engineer. After five years on tfca West Coast Mr. Lowe was appointed district engineer at Invercargill, where ha remained for three years, afterwards going to a similar post at Wanganui. He was appointed district engineer in Auckland in February, 1924. Mr. Lowe completed 40 years with' the Railway Department on October 31 Jasfc, but in view of the important undertakings then being brought to fruition he agreed to postpone his retirement until January 31. Among these larger works have been the completion of the Westfield deviation, the lay-out of tho Auckland goods and passenger railway yards and the approaches to the new railway station. On severing his connection with the department Mr. Lowe will make a trip to Great Britain and the United States.
