THE CUCKOO.
. • ifg 'Sir,—l was interested on reading |p Campbell's story of bird life in muera in the Herald of December 29 The manner in which the cucjs| is hatched and reared by ctfier bijjt is one of the most wonderful things if nature. A cuckoo Jaid its eggs i' n nest of a banana bi; J in a wattle near my home in Queensland, and when the young cuckoo was nearly big enough to fly he used to come out of the nes| and sit on a limb, and squak or cr y out. I have watched |hreo or four dif. ferent kinds of birds feeding lh e cuckoo hatched out by a' banana bird. The cuckoo will deposit its egg in th e nest of a tiny bird that could not possibly feed the greedy young cuckoo, hut the little hungry cuckoo has only to cry out and almost any bird within hearing fti]| feed it.
