COMMON GAMING HOUSE.
BETS IN BILLIARD SALOON. PROPRIETOR IN POLICE COURT. Arrested in his saloon on New Year's Day, a billiard room proprietor, Joseph Jenkins, aged 54, appeared in the Polico Court yesterday on a charge of using premises at 7, Khyber Pass Road, as a common gaming house. Mr. McLiver entered a plea of guilty. Detective Sergeant Kelly said accused had been betting in a fairly large way, anrl a constable who had visited the premises had seen Jenkins take at least 20 bets. There was a wireless set with a loudspeaker in the room. Accused had £6 in his possessicn when he was arrested. Counsel said all billiard rooms at present were in a particularly bad way, and accused had commenced betting in an effort to help to pay the expenses of running the saloon. Tho biggest bet he had taken was 10:;. A fine of £ls was imposed by the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, who fixed default at one month's imprisonment and allowed accused 14 days to make payment. ARREST OF YOUNG MAN. SIMILAR CHARGE PREFERRED. A billiard-saloon proprietor, Joseph Opie, aged 24, was arrested shortly before noon yesterday by Detective Nalder on a charge of using premises at 320, New North Road, Kingsland, as a common gaming house. Accused was brought before Mr. A. J. Stratford, J.P., and was remanded to appear in the Police Court this morning. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO.
