PORTION OF TRAIN DERAILED
(Received January 1, 5.5 p.m.)
PERTH, Jan. 1. Heavy rains have caused serious washouts on the transcontinental railway. An engine with a tender, a mail van and two second-class carriages on the west-bound-express were derailed 63 miles east of Rawinna. No one was injured, but tho rolling-stock was considerably damaged. \ News regarding the floods and tho condition of the country is not obtainable, owing to the breakdown of the railway telegraph service. A cyclonic storm struck the town of Marble Bar last Saturday night, damaging tho post office, the police station, courthouse and residency. Ihe wind reached a velocity of 80 miles an hour. The gale continued on Monday in tho Nullagine district, 75 miles from Marble Bar. The rainfall reached nearly six inches in some places. Tho telegraph service to Wyndham is dislocated, messages having to go via Adelaide and Darwin, with radio filling the gap between the latter centre and Wyndham.
